What is Gum Disease Treatment?

There are two different types of gum disease that is common in patients. The first is gingivitis and the second is periodontitis.

Gingivitis :

Gingivitis is the more mild form of gum disease and it is extremely common. Gingivitis causes irritation, redness and swelling of the gingiva. The gingiva is the part of your gum the sits around the base of your teeth.

Although there are different causes of gingivitis the most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. The best way to prevent gingivitis is through developing good oral hygiene habits such as brushing twice a day, flossing and getting regular check-ups with your dentist.

Gingivitis is treatable and in fact it is important to treat gingivitis before it progresses to the more advanced form of gum disease periodontitis. Gingivitis can be treated by your dentist or oral hygienist with regular cleaning.

Periodontitis:

Periodontitis is a serious infection of the gums and unfortunately is once again quite common. Periodontitis once again causes irritation, redness and swelling of the gingiva, however it also damages the gingiva and other tissue in the mouth and can then go on to destroy the bone around the teeth. As the bone around the teeth is destroyed, they recess off the teeth, causing the teeth in the mouth to become loose and in some cases causes tooth loss as the teeth have no bone to stabilise them.

Again, although there are different causes of periodontitis the most common cause is poor oral hygiene and the best way to prevent periodontitis is by developing good oral hygiene habits and getting regular check-ups with your dentist.

Periodontitis is treatable; however, treatment should include seeing a periodontist and could include surgical procedures in advanced cases
